This knife is generally a combination knife. It is not a single weapon, rather a combination of two. There are brass knuckles that include a blade as well. The blade is a long one and is usually perpendicular to the knuckles. You can wear the knuckles and use the blade to your advantage. The addition of knuckles is to enhance the control over the blade.
Brass knuckle knife, as determined above, is a combination of a couple of things. First, the knuckle duster, and second, the blade. Trench knife was considered a handy weapon in close quarters combat. Since it featured brass knuckles, it could be worn around the knuckles. Once the soldiers had worn it, it was impossible for the enemies to disarm the. They landed into the trenches to fight their enemies with this particular weapon.
However, there is no evidence to suggest that trench knife was the main or primary fighting weapon. Swords or rifles could be the primary weapons, but history suggests how crucial was this knife in enabling soldiers to overcome their enemies.
The US M1917 is still considered the first ever brass knuckle knife. However, Germans and British also claim to have developed the first ever trench knife. The modern knuckle knives that we use are more close to the US version of this knife.

In a close quarters combat, there is always a chance that you lose your weapon. But, this knife prevents you from this loss because it is worn around the knuckles and no once can disarm you.
